Embracing The Prep School Year

It is not unusual to be worried when your child heads off to school for their first year in Prep. I'm an older mum with only one child, so every experience my daughter has is a new experience for me too. She starts Prep this year, and I am both nervous and excited for her. I want to use this blog to help other mums whose children are either beginning Prep this year or in the coming years ahead. I will share tips for first day nerves, getting into the grove of schooling, and how to tackle relations with other children of this age group. It is going to be an exciting year of growth for us both.

Embracing the Prep School Year

Do you know how to choose a child care centre?

by Marcia Wagner

As a parent, you will want to be involved in the life of your child from the earliest stages. You will want to be present to guide them and help them with whatever challenges may enter their young lives. However, after a while, you won't necessarily be able to look after your child all day, every day. Often, you may need to work for at least part of the day, and unless you have unusually obliging relatives or friends, you must find a child care centre where your child can be left while you are working. When looking for a child care centre, you can't pick the first centre you happen to drive past. There are specific criteria by which you must judge any child care centre so you can be certain you have found the right place for your child to stay.

Practical Considerations

When thinking about a particular child care centre, you must be certain that it meets your practical needs. Think about whether you can reach the centre easily. You might want to have the child care centre close to your place of work, so you make drop-offs and collections easily, but you must be sure you won't be changing your job or working from a different location soon. Another practical concern is the level of fees charged by the child care centre. Ask any prospective child care centre for a list of fees and see whether they include everything or whether there are catering or other hidden costs that may need to be added.

Educational content

A child care centre will always involve an element of learning. There are national regulations that set out the standards you should expect any child care centre to reach. Ask the child care centre about their chosen curriculum and find out how closely it aligns with your ethos and values.

Staffing levels

One of the best indications of the quality of care offered at a child care centre is the staff to child ratio. Whatever promises the child care centre makes will only be fulfilled if sufficient staff are available. Before choosing a child care centre, it can be helpful to ask about their staffing levels. You could also visit the child care centre while it is open. This visit will allow you to see how the staff and children interact and whether the children appear content most of the time.

Reach out to a child care centre in your area, such as Hopskotch Kindergarten, to learn more.
