Embracing The Prep School Year

It is not unusual to be worried when your child heads off to school for their first year in Prep. I'm an older mum with only one child, so every experience my daughter has is a new experience for me too. She starts Prep this year, and I am both nervous and excited for her. I want to use this blog to help other mums whose children are either beginning Prep this year or in the coming years ahead. I will share tips for first day nerves, getting into the grove of schooling, and how to tackle relations with other children of this age group. It is going to be an exciting year of growth for us both.

Two Reasons Why Aqua Aerobics Classes Are So Popular

by Marcia Wagner

Are you curious about water aerobics? Here are a couple of reasons why aqua aerobics classes are so popular.

They allow people to get a full-body workout even if they have sore joints

One reason why aqua aerobics classes are popular is that they enable those who take them to exercise their whole body, even if they have sore joints. People who, for example, are recovering from joint injuries, have arthritis or have developed age-related joint problems often find it hard to do full-body workouts, such as standard aerobics or dance classes, as the movements that they do during these classes can put a lot of strain on their joints and cause them pain.

However, when people with this issue do aerobics with most of their body submerged in the water of a swimming pool, their joints don't get subjected to anywhere near as much force as they would, if they did these exercises on 'dry land'. This is because the water supports their bodies whilst they do movements that would otherwise cause them joint pain (such as jumping jacks). This not only makes the workouts less uncomfortable for them but also allows them to exercise more frequently, as they don't need as much downtime in between their exercise classes, to recover from the pain inflicted on their joints. This, in turn, can lead to their joint health improving and them experiencing the many other health benefits that come with regular exercise.

They allow people to workout without overheating

When people have not exercised in a long time or are quite overweight, they can often find that they overheat very easily when they try to work out. The perspiration, facial flushing and general feeling of being too hot can be very uncomfortable. Additionally, there are many people who not only overheat easily but also find that when they get too hot, they are prone to fainting or dizziness, which makes it impossible to finish their workouts.

People like this often end up using aqua aerobics classes as their main source of physical activity. The reason for this is that even though aqua aerobics classes can involve lots of vigorous exercises, the class participants don't tend to notice that they're sweating or become so hot that they need to take a break. This is because the sweat is rinsed off their bodies as soon as it appears by the swimming pool water (which means they don't have to deal with the discomfort of being soaked in sweat or need to be concerned about sweat patches) and because the water itself helps to keep their bodies from getting excessively hot.
